I am a professor of general linguistics at the University of Louvain. Currently, I am the head of the Institute for Language and Communication, a research institute of approximately 100 people.

My main research interests are directed towards:

    * discourse studies (discourse structure, coherence, cohesion)
    * contrastive (corpus) linguistics (Dutch/French)
    * the semantics of discourse markers
    * grammaticalization and intersubjectification (of discourse markers)
    * speech vs. writing
    * L1 vs L2 discourse structure
